The
Vaughanster's
Biography
of
Calista Flockhart
19641111 - Calista is born in Freeport, Illinois, to Kraft
Foods executive Ronald Flockhart and his English teaching wife, Kay Calista.
Her older brother is Gary. Her mother names her Calista Kay. Calista means
"most beautiful" in Greek. However, Calista, contrary to rumor, is not
Greek. She is Irish, English
and Italian.
-----
1964-1978- Calista's father, as an executive for Kraft Foods,
Inc., moves a lot, so he and his wife raise Calista in Illinois, Iowa,
Minnesota, and upstate New York, before finally settling in New Jersey.
-----
1979-1983- Calista attends Shawnee High School in Medford
Township, New Jersey, through all four years (Freshman through Senior)
of high school, and graduates in 1983. There, she serves on the Student
Council, participates in the drama program, and becomes a cheerleader.
Two football players, named Brian Anderson and Chip Coskery, were her high
school sweethearts.
-----
1983-1984- Calista attends a college (perhaps Camden County
Community College) in the vicinity of Medford, New Jersey.
-----
1984-1988- Calista attends a specialized, competitive class
from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, at Rutgers
University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Approximately thirty students
enroll in her class, but only a half dozen graduate, including Calista,
who receives a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre.
-----
ca. 1985 - In her sophomore year at Rutgers, Calista meets
Jane Krakowski, her room-mate's best friend. Jane already works on
Broadway, so Calista often asks her questions about how to get employment.
Also in Calista's sophomore year, William Esper (Mason Gross' theatre director
and Calista's acting teacher) makes an exception to policy by letting her
perform on the School's main stage. Only juniors and seniors are allowed
to do this. However, Harold Scott insists that Calista, though only a sophomore,
perform in his production of William Inge's Picnic.
-----
1989-1997- Calista lives and works in New York City. She
aspires to be an actress, but lives with three other women in a two-bedroom
apartment, and works as a waitress and an aerobics instructor, while seeking
employment as an actress. Her hands appear wrapping hamburgers in a Burger
King commercial.
-----
1989 - In the spring of 1989, Calista
appears as a babysitter in one episode of The Guiding Light. Later
that year, she debuts professionally on a New York stage, in Beside
Herself at the Circle Repertory Theatre, alongside Melissa
Joan Hart.
-----
1994 - Calista obtains the part
of
Laura, on Broadway, in The Glass Menagerie. When Calista auditions
for this part, actress Julie Harris sees her and feels that there is no
need for further auditions, because Calista seems so ideal for the role
of her character's daughter. Calista receives a Clarence Derwent Award
for this performance. However, she continues to live from hand-to-mouth,
so her brother sends her a case of Chef
Boyardee ravioli.
-----
1993 - Calista appears in the movie
Naked
in New York.
-----
1994 - Although she appears in the
movies Naked in New York and Getting In, in 1993 and 1994,
respectively, Calista feels Robert Redford provides her first big break
into Hollywood movies by getting her a role as a Barnard Girl in Quiz
Show, in which she also appears in 1994.
-----
1995 - Calista appears in a movie
called Drunks, on the set of which she meets actors and actresses
such as Dianne Wiest and Faye Dunaway. She also appears as a drug addict
in the title role of the movie Jane Doe, co-starring with this movie's
writer and director, Christopher Peditto.
-----
1996 - Calista appears with Robert
Vaughn in Milk & Money. She also appears with Robin Williams,
Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane and Dianne Wiest, in The Birdcage.
-----
1997 - Calista appears with Kevin
Bacon in Telling Lies in America. She also continues to work in
Broadway theatre, playing the role of Natasha in Anton Chekhov's Three
Sisters. Calista's biggest break comes in the form of an audition for
the title role of the television series Ally McBeal. David E. Kelley,
the creator, having heard of Calista, requests that she audition for the
part. Calista hesitates, because she has to negotiate a contract and make
a commitment (potentially for years) before the audition. However, she
reads the script and finds it so compelling that she takes a plane, with
Jane Krakowski, from New York to Los Angeles, to audition for the role.
Calista obtains the title role, and Jane a supporting role. When the producer
informs Calista that she has the part of Ally McBeal, she says, "Oh, fuck!
Now I've got to move!"
-----
19970908 - The Pilot episode of Ally McBeal airs
for the first time.
-----
1997-2002- Calista plays the title role in Ally McBeal
for all five years that Fox broadcast it. The media starts accusing her
of setting a bad example for young women by losing too much weight, and
spreads vicious rumors, which continue to circulate years later, that she
suffers from anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia. Some people also suspect
that she abuses cocaine and/or other illegal drugs. Calista admits to abstaining
from sweets during this period of time, but adamantly denies ever having
suffered from anorexia or bulimia, and she insists that she has always
worked out, and never used any illegal drugs.
